Breast Reduction

It is the surgical restoration of the ideal appearance of the breasts, which are usually large after periods such as excessive weight gain, breastfeeding or congenitally large. Breast reduction surgery not only corrects the appearance but also reduces neck, back and lower back pain due to the reduction in weight. It also helps to solve hygienic problems such as fungus in excessively sagging breasts.

Before the surgery, as in augmentation operations, breast ultrasound is performed under the age of 40, and breast ultrasound and mammography examinations are performed in women over the age of 40.

Although the surgical techniques are different, the general expected appearance is the same. The incision made resembles a tennis racket in the form of a line extending round and underneath, including the nipple and its surroundings, and this incision remains in the bra or bikini. In people with excessively sagging breast tissue and very large breasts, a horizontal line (inverted T-shaped) incision can be made under the breast fold. This incision also remains in the bra and bikini. In people with accessory breast tissue that has grown to the armpit and excess armpit fat tissue, it is also possible to correct the appearance in the armpit by extending this incision to the armpit. The technique to be performed at the preoperative stage is decided together with the patient.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2 hours.

During the operation, a vacuum tube (drain) is placed in both breasts to prevent fluid accumulation. The drains are removed the day after surgery and the patient is discharged on the first day.

After discharge, oral antibiotic and painkiller treatment is continued for 5-7 days.

A special bra is required for 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Breast reduction surgery can be performed after the age when breast development is completed (18-20 years of age). Although it does not cause any problems in the age group who do not plan to give birth, the question “Will I have problems with breastfeeding?” comes to mind especially in the young patient group who have not given birth. Since the breast tissue is removed in breast reduction surgery, there are milk ducts that are thicker than the nipple and thinner in the breast tissue extending up to your rib cage. It is possible to partially preserve the nipple and milk ducts during surgery, and this is especially important in young patients, although the possibility of damage to the milk ducts increases in very large breasts. In general, breastfeeding is possible after breast reduction surgery, but there is always a risk of not being able to breastfeed. However, at a young age, especially in patients with very large breasts, surgery is a reason for preference due to hygienic problems such as neck pain, feeling social pressure and fungus, and all these possibilities are definitely shared with the patient during the preoperative interview.
