Aesthetic Nose Surgery – Rhinoplasty
The nose, which is one of the most important organs that determine facial expression, is one of the most important organs in determining facial symmetry because it is located in the center of the face. It is the most performed plastic surgery in the total population.
As in other plastic surgeries, patient expectations are also important in nose surgeries, because each nose type and each patient’s nasal problem are different from each other. While it is possible to correct only the tip of the nose or the back of the nose, the entire nasal structure may need to be corrected in patients with problems throughout the nose. Functionally, breathing problems may also need to be corrected due to cartilage and bone curvatures. In this respect, nose surgeries can provide both aesthetic and functional gains.
With rhinoplasty surgery, the size of the nose can be changed, the large holes can be reduced, the shape of the tip can be changed, and the angles with the forehead and lips can be corrected. The patient’s expectations from the surgery are important.
Surgery
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, it takes around 1 hour when only the tip of the nose is treated, but usually this period lasts between 2-2.5 hours for all nasal interventions. I perform rhinoplasty surgeries with both open and closed techniques depending on the expectations of my patient. Although both techniques have various advantages over each other, the main thing is the patient’s nasal structure and wishes. In open surgery, the cartilages forming the tip and upper part of the nose are intervened by incisions made at the tip and inside of the nose. The arch on the upper part of the nose is filed and the nasal roof is narrowed by bringing the bones together. Breathing problems are eliminated by correcting curvatures in the middle nasal septum or nasal flesh development. In closed surgery, instead of the incision at the tip of the nose, it is intervened with incisions made through it.
The long tampons used in the past and the inability to breathe with the pressure created by the tampons, the pain of pulling the tampons was one of the biggest fears of the patients, thanks to the silicone tampons that take the shape of the nose, this problem is eliminated and there is no problem with breathing during the period of silicone tubes.
After Surgery
The patient is discharged the day after surgery. Silicone tampons are removed on the 2nd day. The plaster, which is called splint and stabilizes the nose, is used for a week. After the surgery, bruises around the nose and under the eyes may be seen to a small extent, but with patient compliance, the frequency of seeing such bruises has become quite rare. Although you can return to work within 3-4 days, the ideal period is 1 week. Heavy work, prolonged bending forward, wearing glasses, heavy sports should not be done for the first month. Sportive activities can be started after one month.
It takes up to one year for the edema in the nose to completely disappear and the shape of the nose to settle. While the edema on the bone structure disappears in the first month, this period takes up to six months at the tip of the nose. Flexibility of the cartilages and decreased sensation on the nasal skin are expected findings and it takes between 6 months and 1 year to return to its former state.
