Prominent Ear Surgery

The ear is an organ made of soft curved cartilage. There may be genetic problems in the ear, which is a specialized organ for the perception of sound. The most well-known of these problems is prominent ear. Prominent ear is not an acquired condition. When a person is born, their ears are either prominent or not. Prominent ear means that the prominent part of the ear is larger than normal.

The prominent ear looks big because it is very prominent towards the front. In the prominent ear problem, the angle that the ear makes with the head is more than normal, so it is said to have a bad appearance in shape. The person is usually uncomfortable with this situation and wants the problem to be solved. In this case, prominent ear surgery is performed.

At what age is prominent ear surgery performed?

Normally, the ear completes its development at the age of 6. This is a very good timing. Because children with prominent ears have problems in this regard at school age and their psychology suffers. The age of 6 is a suitable time for prominent ear surgery as it is a pre-school period. Prominent ear surgery is performed from the age of 6. The surgery is performed not only on children but also on adults.

How is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?

Prominent ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia at an early age and under local anesthesia with various sedative drugs during the transition to adulthood. In the surgery, which takes about 1.5 hours, incisions are made behind the ear and the cartilage structure that forms the auricle is exposed and shaped. This process is performed with incisions and stitches.

People who undergo surgery under local anesthesia can return home the same day, while other patients are hospitalized for a while. After the surgery, both ears are bandaged closed and the dressing is followed. When the bandages are removed, the patient is advised to wear a tennis band and keep their ears closed.

After Prominent Ear Surgery

The band placed after prominent ear surgery will cope with the desire to correct the shape of the cartilage. In this way, the pressure on the stitches holding the cartilage will decrease and after a while the cartilage will harden and take its new form. For a while after the surgery, it will be appropriate to prevent the ears from rubbing against the pillow while sleeping. After the removal of the band, the ear will gradually take its new shape and will remain that way until the end of the person’s life.
